Covid in Wales: How many deaths have there been?



A further 63 people have died after contracting coronavirus in Wales, taking the total to 3,263, according to the latest figures.

Public Health Wales (PHW) also reported a further 2,161 new cases across the country, which went into lockdown earlier than planned
over the weekend.

It takes the number of positive tests to 133,263 since the pandemic began.

The figures only show deaths in hospitals and some care homes and only involving confirmed Covid cases.

It means the latest registered deaths reported by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), which take longer to compile and are published
on a weekly basis, are significantly higher at 4,200.

Every health board in Wales recorded deaths on Thursday, with 24 in Cwm Taf Morgannwg, 19 in Aneurin Bevan, nine in Swansea Bay, four
in Cardiff and Vale, three in Hywel Dda and one each in Betsi Cadwaladr and Powys. Six were resident outside Wales.

Merthyr Tydfil, which continues to have the highest case rate in Wales, saw a slight drop, taking it to 1,311 cases per 100,000 people
in seven days.

The second highest rate was in Bridgend with 1,151 cases per 100,000 people, while the lowest is in Anglesey (62.8) and Gwynedd (73.1).

PHW will not report coronavirus cases on Christmas Day or New Year's Day, and warned the next-day figures would be higher as a result.

Why are figures lower in Powys?
Acute patients from Powys are usually treated across the border at hospitals in England, so deaths of Powys residents usually only
appear in registrations reported later by the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

Those ONS figures - which are higher - also count both confirmed and suspected cases of Covid, as well as deaths in all settings,
including care homes, hospices and people's own homes. The most recent weekly figures are the highest since May.

PHW reports new deaths daily, but these are usually from previous days.

This week there have been 4 more positive COVID cases at my place of work.  I remember when people were questioning the severity of COVID because they didnt know anyone that had the virus.  I am curious if now people are seeing more cases or not.
